私は無神論者ではありません。汎神論者と呼ぶこともできないと思います。この問題は、限りある知性で理解するには大きすぎます。私たちは、数多くの言語で書かれた書物で埋め尽くされた広大な図書館に入った子どものような存在です。子どもは、だれかがこの膨大な書物は書いたのには間違いないとは知っていますが、どうやって書かれたかはわかりません。書物が書かれている言語も、子どもには理解できません。書物の並びにも何か意味があるのではないかとうっすらと感じていますが、どういう意味かまではわかりません。それが、最も優れた知性を持つ人であっても、神に向き合った人間の姿だと思えるのです。宇宙が驚くほど精緻にできていて、一定の法則に従っていることはわかるのですが、その法則は、ぼんやりとしか理解できないのです。
“I’m not an atheist. I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws.”
