マックス・プランク（1858～1947年）は「量子論」を確立したノーベル賞物理学者として知られています。また、相対性理論や電磁波の研究にも貢献し、現代物理学の父とも呼ばれています。このプランクは、宇宙と物質の起源について次のように語っています。
物理学者として、つまり、物質の探求という、まったく退屈な科学に一生を捧げた者として、私のことを空想家だと疑う人はいないだろう。その私が原子を研究してきて言えることはこれだ。「物質など存在しない。すべての物質は、原子という最も小さな太陽系の中で、原子の粒子を振動させる力によってのみ発生し、存在している」。
だが、宇宙のどこにも、知的な力や永遠の力は存在しない。したがって、この力の背後には、意識を持つ知的な精神または霊が存在するはずだ。これが、あらゆる物質の源である。

新約聖書のヘブル書1：2b～3aでは、次のように言われています。
2 …神は御子を万物の相続者と定め、御子によって世界を造られました。 3 御子は神の栄光の輝き、また神の本質の完全な現れであり、その力あるみことばによって万物を保っておられます。…
この聖書箇所によると、この宇宙とすべての物質を保っているのはキリスト（「御子」）です。また、ヘブル1：10では、次のようにも言われています。
10 …「主よ。あなたははじめに地の基を据えられました。天も、あなたの御手のわざです」
