ウィリアム・ハーシェル（William Herschel、1738年～1822年）は、二重星や天王星など、500以上の星を発見した天文学者です。また、当時の最も高度な反射望遠鏡を制作し、星雲や銀河のカタログを作成しています。

ハーシェルは、熱心なキリスト教徒で「不信仰な天文学者は狂っているに違いない（The un-devout astronomer must be mad）¹」と語ったほどでした。また、科学的発見の目的について次のようにも語っています。

人間のすべての発見は、いと高き方からもたらされ、聖書に記されている真理をさらに強く確信するという目的のためにのみ行われるように思われる。

ハーシェルは、南アフリカの教育改革にも取り組み、この教育プログラムの目的を次のように記しています。

…市民生活と社会生活の関係を指導することで善良な市民と人間を形成し、創造主であり贖い主でもある方と結び付くために必要なことを教えることによって、より高次の存在へと導くのである。

… to form good citizens and men by instructing them in the relations of civil and social life; and to fit them for a higher state of the existence, by teaching them those [things] which connect them with the Maker and Redeemer. ³

ハーシェルが人々を聖書の神（「創造主であり贖い主でもある方」）に導くことを使命と感じていたことがわかる言葉です。
