フランスの政治哲学者、ジャン・ジャック・ルソー（1712～1778年）は、ユダヤ人について次のような言葉を残している。
ユダヤ人は驚くべき景色を見せてくれる。（古代王国の）ヌマ、リュクルゴス、ソロンの律法は死んだが、それよりはるかに古いモーセの律法はまだ生きている。アテネ、スパルタ、ローマは滅び、その民はすべて地上から消え去ったが、シオンは滅んでもその子らを失うことはない。ユダヤ人はあらゆる国と交わるが、その中で消滅することは決してない。もはや指導者を持たないが、それでもなお民族であり、もはや国を持たないが、それでもなお市民である。
